Outstanding Results for Waitākere College Wrestling Team at Auckland Championships

In the final week of Term 1, members of the Waitākere College wrestling training team competed at the College Sport Auckland Wrestling Championships held at Dilworth College.

Seven students from the programme attended the event, having trained consistently since the beginning of Term 1 in preparation for the competition. The championships showcased a high level of talent from schools across Auckland, including current New Zealand U17 and U20 representatives.

Our students delivered outstanding performances, achieving the following results:

  • Joshua Dittmar – 1st place, Junior Boys 69kg (undefeated)
  • Richard Rodionov – 1st place, Junior Boys 85kg (undefeated)
  • Tyler-James Hutchinson – 2nd place, Junior Boys 100kg
  • Anahera Kairau – 3rd place, Junior Girls 60kg
  • Ngakirikiri Marupo – 3rd place, Senior Girls 68kg
  • Abdullah Ali – 3rd place, Senior Boys 85kg

Following their success, students were presented with their medals by Mr Shanahan during their respective year-level assemblies, receiving recognition in front of their peers.

These results highlight the rapid growth of wrestling at Waitākere College, a sport that was only introduced in 2024 and has had over 20 students try it out this year. The continued development and success of the programme reflects the commitment of the students involved and the support of the coaching team.

Training takes place each Thursday after school at Liston College, where students are coached by Lucas Alabastro, a two-time Junior National Freestyle Wrestling Champion and instructor at the Daredevil Jiu Jitsu Academy in Auckland.

Any students interested in joining the wrestling training team are encouraged to see Mr Hough in the Waitākere College Sports Department.
